Water heaters usually give some warning before they fail. Catching the signs early can help you replace a unit on your schedule, not in the middle of the night.

Seven warning signs

  1. No hot water, or not enough. Running out faster than you used to.
  2. Water that is not as hot as it was.
  3. Rusty or discoloured hot water.
  4. Strange noises. Popping, rumbling or banging from the tank.
  5. Water around the heater. Leaks should never be ignored.
  6. Age. Tank units often last around 8 to 12 years, though this varies.
  7. Frequent repairs.

What to do if you see a leak

Shut off the water supply to the heater and turn off its power or fuel supply if you can do so safely, then call a technician. If you smell gas, leave the home and call your gas utility or 911.

Repair or replace?

A newer unit with a small issue may be worth repairing. An older unit that is leaking is usually better replaced. We install, replace and repair both tank and tankless water heaters.

How to help your water heater last longer

  • Have it inspected and serviced regularly.
  • Keep the area around it clear.
  • Ask a technician about flushing the tank, especially if the water is hard.
  • Watch for small leaks around fittings and the base of the tank.

Plan ahead

If your tank is getting old, replacing it before it fails lets you choose the type you want, whether tank or tankless, and avoids the stress of a cold shower. Call us if you would like an inspection or a replacement estimate.
