A little preparation in the fall can help your furnace run reliably when the cold arrives. Here is a simple checklist you can work through before winter.

1. Replace or check the filter

A dirty filter restricts airflow and makes your furnace work harder. Many filters need replacing every one to three months, so follow the guidance for your filter type.

2. Clear vents and registers

Make sure furniture, rugs and curtains are not blocking supply vents or return grilles.

3. Check outdoor vents and intakes

Some furnaces have intake and exhaust pipes that run outside. Keep them clear of leaves and, once winter arrives, of snow and ice.

4. Test your heat early

Turn the thermostat up on a cool day and make sure the furnace starts and heats properly. It is much easier to book a repair before the first deep freeze.

5. Test your alarms

Test smoke and carbon monoxide alarms and replace batteries as needed.

6. Keep the area around the furnace clear

Do not store paint, cleaning products or other items close to your furnace or water heater.

7. Book a professional tune-up

A seasonal tune-up includes a system inspection and performance check, and can help catch small problems early. Our maintenance work includes annual heating system maintenance, filter replacement and seasonal preparation.

What happens during a professional tune-up

A technician typically inspects the burners and ignition, blower, controls, thermostat, airflow and venting, and tests safety controls. Small problems found early are usually simpler and cheaper to fix than a mid-winter breakdown.

Do not forget the thermostat

Replace batteries if your thermostat needs them, and check that its schedule suits your household. A programmable or smart thermostat can make it easier to keep your home comfortable.
